Actor/Comedian Martin Lawrence chose Conan O’Brien’s stage earlier this week to announce that there will be a third movie in the Bad Boys franchise. This announcement comes almost a month after Lawrence tweeted: “11 years ago today, #BadBoyII was released in theaters. Feelin’ it’s about time for #3… what do you think Will?” The original Bad Boys film, starring Lawrence and Will Smith, debuted in 1995 and featured the two men as detectives in the Miami Police Department who were investigating the disappearance of $100,000,000 from a secure police vault; the movie grossed $141,407,024 worldwide.
The film’s sequel, Bad Boys 2, was released in 2003 picking up eight years later with Detectives Burnett (Lawrence) and Lowrey (Smith) who are investigating the trafficking of ecstasy into Miami. This film grossed $273,339,559 nearly doubling the money made from the first film. While the film received mostly negative reviews from critics, fans everywhere were hooked on the on screen chemistry shared by Lawrence and Smith.
In 2008, director Michael Bay, hinted that there could possibly be a third film – but that costs could cause a major setback; however, in 2009 it was announced that Peter Craig, who co-wrote The Town, starring Ben Affleck, was hired to write the script for the third film. Five years later, after no script or film seemed to be in existence, producer Jerry Bruckheimer announced that Davis Guggenheim was working on the movie’s outline, stating: “…we’re working on an outline right now. Hopefully we’ll see a screenplay in the next three months. And that will become a movie I hope.”
However, five years after that announcement and 11 years after Bad Boys 2, there hasn’t been much other information on the release of the third film – until now. Lawrence told talk show host Conan O’Brien on Wednesday, “they’re working on a script, they’re close and it all looks good;” however, Lawrence’s co-star, Will Smith has yet to release any sort of statement on the matter which leaves fans to wonder if he will be a part of the project. Either way, one thing is for sure:after 11 years away, Bad Boys 3, when and if it is released, will have a lot to live up to.
